Quick Break for World Cup thoughts

So, after watching the US-Slovenia game, I know that the US didn’t play well the first half allowing Slovenia to score two goals.  In the second half, however, led by Landon Donovan, they turned it on and were able to tie it up.  In the 86th minute, Edu scores a winning goal off a kick from Donovan that is called back by the ref.  Every replay shows no foul by a US player but multiple fouls by the Slovenians who were bear hugging and head locking the US. It was a ridiculous call by a terrible ref who made multiple mistakes throughout the game (such as giving Findley a yellow for a ball that hit him in the face?).  The bottom line is that fouls are called incorrectly fairly often.  It is quite another thing to call a foul that doesn’t exist in any form.  No replay showed, no commentator saw and no viewer saw any foul that could be attributed to the US on that play.  This ref basically changed the Group C World Cup points by calling a nonexistent foul jeopardizing the US chances to make it into the knockout round.  Giving a card when one isn’t due or not giving a card is different than recalling a winning goal in the final minutes of a World Cup game.  This ref should never be assigned to another high level game – ever.  Maybe Africa can deal with these arbitrary and phantom fouls but the rest of the world can’t – and shouldn’t have to.  Let’s hope the US can focus and play against Algeria they way they played against Slovenia in the second half of today’s game and move on to the next round.

As an aside, I know refereeing is hard.  I also know that other teams have had to deal with issues from refs as well (9 yellows in the Germany game) but this reeks because the ref will not disclose what he thought he saw as the foul.  He is closed-mouthed and FIFA rules don’t require any kind of accountability.  FIFA describes soccer and its organization as touting “Fair play” – in the words of Inigo Montoya – “I do not think this word means what you think it means.” How can a game be fair when the ref holds the result of the game in his hand regardless of actual behavior on the field.  The game is no longer controlled by the players, but by the ridiculous and inconsistent calls of the refs.

Season Finale thoughts

Nurse Jackie was awesome and had, perhaps, the best end line of all “I’m Jackie and I’m an addict.  Blow me.”  Loved it.  I wondered from the beginning how long she would get away with it.  Now I wonder how it will play out.  I kind of think it will send her back into Eddie’s arms since he seems to deal with the drug part and now he knows everything about her.  The most interesting relationship in jeopardy to me isn’t Kevin, it’s her relationship with O’Hara.  O’Hara knows far more about Jackie’s real life than Kevin ever did.  By keeping the various pockets of her life secret from others, she’s made quite a mess of everything.  I’m sure the drug dealer will be back too.  I, for one, can’t wait for its return in the Fall.  Will Jackie quit using?  Will she even try?

United States of Tara.  The revelation of the half brother, who is most likely the molester, will be a great start for next season.  New characters, such as Shoshanna and Chicken, were really good but could have completely been jump the shark moments.  Still a pretty tight show so I will continue watching.

I liked the Glee season finale and appreciated some of the more subtle insights into the characters – Sue choosing New Directions for first place, Puck telling Quinn he loved her “even more now” and others.  What I didn’t like was that Rachel’s mother, who has declined a relationship with her, is adopting Quinn’s baby?  I love the character and am glad she is staying around – don’t love that result for the baby.   Also, since when does one guy singing (Jonathan Groff) make it a show choir?  Groff rocked Bohemian Rhapsody though.  Vocal Adrenaline had good dancers but he is the only one that really sang.  While New Directions had Finn and Rachel as leads, everyone participated.  Not surprised with the result and I think it is better that they lost so they can really want it even more next year.

Haven’t watched Justified yet but I bet it rocks!

Lost finale

As much television as I watch, the good and the bad, Lost was one of the good shows. It was complex, interesting and had many connections to literature and philosophy, making it a thoughtful and anticipated viewing experience every week. Unfortunately, the finale fell far short of any kind of satisfaction. I’m not talking about the multiple questions left open (like what happened to Walt) but more about the big answer. Early on, the writers promised that the island wasn’t Purgatory. Well, it wasn’t but I think they split some tiny hairs. They created the Sideways world so that Purgatory could still be the answer without going back on their word. This ending was trite and hackneyed as any SciFi fan knows. Emotionally, I enjoyed the resolution of the characters’ storylines but Lost was a plot driven show to a large degree (despite protestations to the contrary) and the bigger answers should have been better. I don’t regret watching the show and enjoyed it (for the most part) all seasons but was very disappointed in the manner it was ended. No innovation there.
